The Wrecker by Clive Cussler…Worth The Read?
Undeniably Yes! Next to the Dirk Pitt novels, the Issac Bell stories have got to be the best addition to Clive Cussler Books. The Wrecker is a wonderful adventure story set over 100 years in the past taking advantage of the best technologies available at that time…guaranteed to leave the reader on the edge of his seat wanting more, unable to pause the adventure and put down the book!
Clive Cussler begins by introducing us to the villain, then continues to layout a great storyline centered around the railroad industry at the turn of the century complete with terror, destruction and fear. A railroad tycoon overwhelmed by accidents and untimely deaths of his workers, faces certain ruin of his railroad company when a madman zeros in on him for demise. After the saboteur successfully eludes the railroad’s security, our tycoon must call on outside assistance.
Enter premier agent Isaac Bell from the Van Dorn Detective Agency taking charge of this investigation. Bell left his life of privilege to follow his passion of being a detective. The character of Isaac Bell can’t help but draw you into the story completely with his rugged appearance and his talent and experience which makes him more than capable to handle himself in any fight. With a deep desire to stop the growing threat to the railroads, Isaac Bell sets out to stop this madman any way possible. Even if it means high speed chases with some of the quickest trains of the time. Tracking a dangerous opponent while racing across the country, accidents are bound to occur…sounds like the perfect escape from your week and a great choice of book to read this weekend.
What makes this book so good? When you take into consideration the limitations of the time period and keep in mind some of the things we now take for granted like travel and communications, this story is amazing. Nowadays we can catch a plane in New York at breakfast and be eating lunch in Los Angeles by noon. Not to mention the always present ability to simply pick up your cell phone and call anyone at anytime no matter where they may be. In the time period used as a backdrop for this series, the quickest way to travel is the railroad, and the best way to contact someone out of town is with the telegraph. Clive Cussler manages to keep the story moving at a high pace of adventure while still staying true to the limitations of the time.
The Wrecker is definitely a winning novel by Clive Cussler that will leave you eagerly waiting for the next installment. I for one cannot wait to read the next adventure.
